But God

Draft, under review

Ephesians 2:1–10

1And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,

2in which you used to walk when you conformed to the ways of this world and of the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience.

3All of us also lived among them at one time, fulfilling the cravings of our flesh and indulging its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature children of wrath.

4But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,

5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses. It is by grace you have been saved!

6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,

7in order that in the coming ages He might display the surpassing riches of His grace, demonstrated by His kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

8For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God,

9not by works, so that no one can boast.

10For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.

Reflection

Paul doesn't begin with good news. He begins with a diagnosis. Apart from Christ we were dead in our sins (Eph 2:1), following the drift of the world and our own desires (Eph 2:2–3). Not sick, not struggling, but dead. Dead people don't improve themselves, and that is the point.

Then come two words that change everything: but God (Eph 2:4). Paul piles up the reasons. God is rich in mercy, and He loved us with great love (Eph 2:4). Even while we were dead, He made us alive together with Christ (Eph 2:5). He raised us and seated us with Christ (Eph 2:6). Why? To show, for all the ages to come, how kind His grace is (Eph 2:7).

Then Paul says it plainly: you have been saved by grace through faith (Eph 2:8). Even our faith earns nothing. It simply receives. The whole of salvation is God's gift, so no one can boast (Eph 2:8–9). The criminal on the cross had nothing to offer and was promised paradise (Luke 23:42–43).

But grace doesn't leave us idle. We are God's workmanship, made new in Christ for good works He prepared ahead of time (Eph 2:10). We don't work to be accepted. We work because we are.

Whatever you bring today, failure, fatigue, or a long record of trying, the story still turns on those two words: but God.

charis (Greek, Strong's G5485): grace, unearned favor (Eph 2:5, 8). It flows from eleos (mercy, G1656) in Eph 2:4, and its fruit is God's poiema (workmanship, G4161) in Eph 2:10.
