In Your Presence
Draft, under review
Psalm 16:5–11
5The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; You have made my lot secure.
6The lines of my boundary have fallen in pleasant places; surely my inheritance is delightful.
7I will bless the Lord who counsels me; even at night my conscience instructs me.
8I have set the Lord always before me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
9Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will dwell securely.
10For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol, nor will You let Your Holy One see decay.
11You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand.

Reflection
David's joy in this psalm doesn't come from his circumstances. It comes from his inheritance. The Lord Himself is his portion and his cup, and He holds David's future secure (Ps 16:5). When David looks at his life, the boundary lines have fallen in pleasant places (Ps 16:6). But the delight he describes is mainly in God, not in property.
So he blesses the Lord who counsels him, even at night (Ps 16:7). He keeps the Lord always before him, and because God is at his right hand, he will not be shaken (Ps 16:8). That is why his heart is glad, and his whole being rejoices. Even his body rests secure (Ps 16:9).
Then the psalm reaches beyond David. God will not abandon him to the grave or let His faithful one see decay (Ps 16:10). On the day of Pentecost, Peter explained that David died and was buried, so he was speaking ahead of time about the resurrection of the Messiah (Acts 2:25–31). The joy of this psalm rests finally on an empty tomb.
The last verse gathers everything together. God makes known the path of life. In His presence is fullness of joy, and at His right hand are pleasures that never end (Ps 16:11).
Joy like this can sit alongside tears (2 Cor 6:10). It doesn't depend on a good day. It depends on a good God who is present and a risen Savior who has opened the path of life. Keep Him before you today.
