Clothed in Love

Draft, under review

Colossians 3:12–14

12Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

13Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

14And over all these virtues put on love, which is the bond of perfect unity.

Reflection

Before Paul tells the Colossians what to wear, he tells them who they are: chosen by God, set apart, and dearly loved (Col 3:12). Everything that follows flows from that identity. You don't put on these clothes to earn God's love. You put them on because you already have it.

The wardrobe is plain and demanding: a tender heart, kindness, a humble mind, gentleness and patience (Col 3:12). Then comes the hardest garment, bearing with one another and forgiving whatever complaint you hold, in the way the Lord has forgiven you (Col 3:13). Over all of it, love, which binds the rest together (Col 3:14).

In a strained marriage, this passage isn't a list to hold over your spouse. It is something to pray over yourself, one garment at a time, often through tears. Paul writes it to both husbands and wives, and he warns husbands against harshness (Col 3:19). Grace is meant to flow both ways.

This kind of patience is never a call to tolerate harm. Bearing with ordinary failings is different from enduring abuse. If you are being hurt, threatened or controlled, your safety comes first. Scripture does not require you to stay in danger, so tell someone near you, and report abuse to the authorities (Rom 13:3–4).

The love Paul describes is not ours to manufacture. It is Christ's, who gave Himself for His people (Eph 5:25). Clothe yourself in His love again today.

syndesmos (Greek, Strong's G4886): a bond, something that binds together (Col 3:14). It sits with anechomai (to bear with, G430) and charizomai (to forgive freely, G5483) in Col 3:13.
